Will this work in a tower case?

Hi guys,

First post and I have what probably seems like a silly question so I apologise in advance.

I've built 4 PC's in the past, and I would class myself as intermediate in skill. I am saving up for my next build and I want it to last me a while, I'm a gamer and I'm not happy if I can't run my games on Ultra High. I don't need the best of the best though as I am on a bit of a budget.

I want to use my current case which is a CoolerMaster HAF-X, http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showp...id=CA-279-CM&gclid=CO7S_9uIqrcCFRTMtAodMVkAMA but was thinking about getting something like this as the basis for my upgrade http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BU-116-OE&groupid=43&catid=2479 is it safe to have that fitted vertically? Does a heat sink that size not put a strain on the mobo?

I have never had anything like that before, the stock cooler for my i7 is tiny in comparison.

I want to get a GTX680 (or equivalent) and I'm hoping you are going to tell me that this setup along with my SSD and a decent PSU will be ok.

Really I just need clarification on the logistics of fitting that mobo and heatsink in my case, I'm not too worried about X mobo being better than Y at this stage, I will do some proper research into that after I know what will work.

Many thanks,

Yes that massive heat sink should fit in your case. The ram needs to be low profile though to fit under it. You can find out if large heat sinks will fit if you measure the depth of your case to the motherboard tray and most of the heat sinks have the dimensions in the descriptions.

I just checked my old order and it was a Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping (SLBEJ) 2.66GHz (Nehalem) (Socket LGA1366)

The mobo I currently have is a gigabyte ex58-ud5 (I think?)

I would be more inclined to get a decent cooler and OC that 920 and use the rest of your money on the Gpu.

Thank you for the advice guys.

I had considered overclocking my current system but the thing is, I am really rubbish with numbers and scared of anything remotely mathematical (and I wont go near those system tuners)

Practical I can deal with, hardware etc. But when it comes to tweaking voltages, clock speeds etc I really have no clue.

If you think my current system would still be ok and could cope with a better graphics card and overclocking then perhaps that would be a more cost effective route to go down for now and maybe I should try and learn how to do it myself.

Really appreciate the feedback :)

Thanks I will do.

Before I go and leave you in peace, do you know if this RAM is low profile? It's what I currently have and if I get one of those giant coolers I wonder if this will fit still.

Corsair XMS3 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Tri-Channel (TR3X6G1600C9)

Thanks again for your patience.

Yes mate, will be ok with any cooler.
