Hi there

I have an asus P5n-3 SLI and running 2x1gb 8500 in SLI mode.

Was wondering if I was to take the 2 graphics cards out and replace with a single 4850 or 4870 :
1-would the performance be improved?
2- will it run on this MOBO?
3- if yes to 1 and 2 then how do I upgrade, is it a matter of take 2 cards out put the new one in then start up and load drivers for new one?
4- have a 600w atx (unbranded) psu , will it be ok?

many thanks in advance

For a start what graphics cards do you already have in your system
and your system is a sli board so you would need to swap those 2 cards out for 1 card if you was to go ATI

or you could get a dual GPU ATI card 4850X2 or 3870X2 would be my choices or if you want the best performer 4870X2

thats about all you would be limited to becuse you wouldnt be able to stick in 2 ATI cards

still i cant really give you a proper recomendation becuse i dont know what cards you have in your system to begin with.

hope this helps.

1: not sure *need more info*
2: yes
3: uninstall your drivers via control pannel, reboot into safemode, use drivercleaner to remove all nvidia drivers, reboot & shutdown, still ATI flavor in, start windows normaly, install ati 8.12s, reboot, DONE
4: 600w is fine but depending on factors with it being unbranded, the wattage is fine, but is the quality.

I'm guessing with whats in his sig he has SLI 8500's...
Why?!?!?!?!?!?
That would be a huge jump in my view...

EDIT: Woop woop 500th post.....um carry on  :).....

LOL, and im guessing that he is useing 2x1 Nvidia pc8500 Sli memory * nvidias sneak sli profile memory dualchannel sli profile ect ect ect*

use to have that memory lol back in the day.

hi, thanks for reply, well i am running 2 of 1gb nvidia 8500 graphics in sli mode(2gb total ohysical graphics memory) these were part of the system when i got it
I have 4 gb of normal/unbranded pc ram DDR2

Obviously I understand that these 2 cards even in SLI are not that good, although so far they have done well for online gaming, but looking to start playing games on PC hence the need for the upgrade and the question regarding themotherboards capability to host a new style card

Thanks for anyfurther suggestion

IM getting completely confused here.

we thought you where talking about Graphics cards but i think your talking about RAM _random accsess memory. Types.

4gig is always better than 2gig regarding size ect and should speed your system up but it wont make your games go any faster as memory isnt really what games thrive, what games need are GPUs more than DDR

goes like this

CPU
Memory
GPU.

Virus, thanks for all your replies, your first reply was spot on, you did ask at the beginning "what graphics i currently have" hence I mentioned them again (2x1gb nvidia 8500gt-running in SLI)

so thanks again for ** reply, now that I know that the new graphics card will run with this mobo, i will start choosing ;-)

thanks

4870 would be a good jump, the 8500's cant even utilize that 1GB memory anyway I rekon since even a game when requiring way less than that it wont be playable lol.

Crap cards they are. 4870 would be awesome step up.

8500GT is about 6800GT performance on a good day... couple of them in SLI barely hit 7800GT performance... I've done it before for a laugh... infact I held the 8500GT SLI WR (over 100% OC on the core) for 3D Marks 06 until someone got their hands on cherry picked cards :|

performance is so low you don't actually get any loss from not using a bridge.

As you already have an SLI board I'd say stick with nVidia unless you buy something like the 4870X2... a 9800GTX+ would be in the ballpark of a 4850 for performance and you have the option of adding another one down the road for SLI... pretty much anything is going to be a huge boost over 8500GT SLI.

get 4870 1gb and you will be able to run all games without problems.. one of these cards will make a huge difference compared to you 8(rubish)00gt sli ...

IMO get the 4850, great card & good boost from even 2x8500GTs.

To be sure about the PSU, provide the specs printed on the side...

Thanks for all your replies.

The PSU states the following:
MODEL-ATX 600
Max output 600w
+12v1 18A Max
+12V2 18a max
+5v 30A Max
+3.3v 35A Max
-12v 0.8A Max
+5v/SB 3.0A Max

Awaiting your reply and many thanks for the feedback, will definately get rid of this SLI 8500gt's and if PSU ok then will look at getting the 4850.

For a 600W PSU, +12V Rail(s) seems low. What's the combined Amps/Wattage for +12V Rail? Look at linked pic above & you'll see the difference. 360W(30A) & that is a 400W unit from a reputable brand ;)

The fan should face down because it sucks air aiding also in cooling the rest of the PC.

But you never answered my question about the total Amps (above)?
