I gave my mate a set of 5.1 speakers with subwoofer that had been in my dads garage. They are creative inspire 5.1 5300. They are still working and the subwoofer is working.

This is the diagram for connecting the wires on the back of the subwoofer.

1 Line Out 1 jack (Front L/R)
2 Line Out 2 jack (Rear L/R)
3 Line Out 3 jack (Center/Subwoofer)
4 5.1 channel audio cable (available separately)
5 Front (Audio Input) jack
6 Rear (Audio Input) jack
7 Center/Subwoofer (Audio Input) jack

My mates motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-970A-DS3 and he is on Win 8.1

According to that diagram in the back of the subwoofer he should have the orange jack in centre/subwoofer, the black jack in rear, and the green jack in front and obviously the speakers in the speaker holes. He definitely has all the wires in the correct places in the back of the subwoofer.

The problem he has is the three wires/jacks (orange, black and green) going from the sub to his PC. According to the diagram on the PC the green jack should be going into line out 1 (Front L/R) , the black jack to line out 2 (rear L/R), and the orange to line out 3 (center/subwoofwer). On his motherboard/back of his PC he only has line in, line out and mic?

Is there something he is doing wrong or does he need a dedicated soundcard? I am confused as his motherboard manual says it can do 5.1 sound.

Is there an optical /coaxial port on the motherboard?

It might be able to do digital 5.1 but not analogue.

The specs say that the motherboard supports 7.1. The reason for only green, blue and pink on the board itself, it because it's a lower budget board, so it saves on costs to do it like that. The front audio sockets on the PC need to be used, but using front and rear connections is a right pain with 5.1. You can re-assign the connections with Realtek onboard audio, so he should be able to change pink and blue to orange and black. He will have to connect any headset into the case front audio though, assuming he has an analogue one.

Thanks for that.

When the PC was built (1st time builder) I don't think the front audio was connected.

How do you re-assign the connections? Is it via sound options in control panel?

Edit.

I have just found this

Can you only re-assign the connections via the reg edit? That will be a bit of a pain if that is the case. My mate formats his PC a lot and I mean a lot lol. I also know he will hate having to do the reg edit every time he formats.

By default a pop up box appears when a jack is inserted. When you plug a jack into the pink socket it will appear as 'mic in', just select whichever connection applies from the selection box that appears.

Thanks. I was giving remote support. It is all sorted now. All 5 speakers and subwoofer are working.
