VM 100 Mb Service, currently using the SH1 for wireless with a cat cable coming out of SH to a 500Mbps powerline which feeds my main PC and my son's room. He connects his to a switch and then to his xbox, PC and networked Amp and a separate wireless network in his room using an old router.
My main PC is only on a 200Mbps powerline and I believe this reduces the whole network to 200Mbps

He is happy but the main wireless signal for me is not great when I move away from the SH.

We have 3 tablets, 3 phones, NOWTV and 2 laptops regularly using the wireless signal.

Plan

Place SH1 in modem mode.

Come out of the modem direct into a new 600Mbps powerline with the second in a central location within the house. Here I will have a new ASUS router, I am hoping with the central location and better router we will have good wireless coverage and speed.

From the router I will take a Cat 5/6 cable out to my son bedroom into his switch, which we will upgrade to gigabit, he can then connect PC and Xbox.

I will use one of my old 500Mpbs powerlines to connect my main PC.

Anyone see any issues? Also is the SH modem out speed restricted at all? i.e should I call VM and get a SH2?

In case you are wondering getting a cat cable from the SH to the central location is just too hard right now but I have plan to wire some parts of the house soon. Then I will remove the powerline between the SH and router.

Nothing wrong with the setup. The SH1 is gigabit out the wan port when in modem mode, so it should be fine feeding the asus router.

Powerline adapter will probably be the only thing limiting the speed of that connection. Going from 500Mb to 600Mb probably won't improve anything

If you're using Powerline adapters on the WAN side of the router you need to be very careful, especially if you ever add any additional adapters in the future.

I'd leave the SH1 configured as a router but with the wireless disabled. Configure the Asus as an access point and connect it using the Powerline adapters.

Yes, I will test the connection between the two powerlines and see how bad it is, the powerlines I am after have been tested by a site and saw 93Mbps, which is more than fine for my needs if I get close to this I will be happy.

Bremen

Why careful, what can happen?

Right now I am only really worried about the hardware I need and I think you are saying the kit stays the same its just setup differently......thanks.

Guys

In the ideal world would I come out of the SH1 and into a gigabit switch, then to NAS (do not have yet), router and any other wired connection, like PC and TV. Or SH1 hard wired to router and then out of router to switch?

When you only have two Powerline adapters it looks like a direct connection, but it isn't. The signal is broadcast all over your mains wiring.

If you ever wanted to use Powerline adapters to connect a device on the LAN side you could get unexpected results. If you make sure you set your own unique encryption keys rather than leaving them at default you'll avoid most problems.

The setup looks slightly problematic - strictly speaking you should never share the same medium being used to link the Modem & Router with LAN Traffic destined for the Router - It can cause a lot of issues.

Until you get the infrastructure installed, why not just use the ASUS as just an Access Point in your intended location and leave the SH1 doing both Modem and Routing functions?

Thanks, this is what Bremen said, I guess there will be some trial and error as I have no idea if the powerlines will provide enough speed to the ASUS or whether the ASUS will be fine where the SH is.

I will get the kit and try........

Thanks.

So now I am in a dilemma of which router to buy.........the easy choice is N66U which seems to be the king of all routers.

But with AC here and me not wanting to change for at least 2 years, it seems silly to buy the N66U.

So then the AC56U seems to hit the spot for budget but only being a 2x2 the range is worse than the N66U.

Price difference between the AC66U and AC68U means you may as well go for the AC68U.

So my conclusion is the AC68U is the one to get but then even that is not supposed to be as good as the N66U.

So do I save £50 and just go N66U and upgrade in the future or just go for the AC68U now.

Opinions......has anyone else been through this thought process recently.

and no I have no AC devices currently but I am due to get a new laptop soon and it will.
