I have an Asrock Z-68 pro 3 motherboard,

http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/Z68 Pro3/?cat=Specifications

specifically,

- Dual Channel DDR3 memory technology
- 4 x DDR3 DIMM slots
- Supports DDR3 2133(OC)/1866(OC)/1600/1333/1066 non-ECC, un-buffered memory
- Max. capacity of system memory: 32GB*
- Supports Intel® Extreme Memory Profile (XMP)

currently 2 sticks of 4GB RAM in there and I want to add another 2 sticks but will it work?
Says dual channel in the specs so I'll need to go for 2 x 8GB sticks or will adding 2 more 4GB sticks in work?

Why did they put 4 slots in if they won't all work together?

Thanks

4 sticks will still work in dual channel mode. The trick here is getting 4 identical sticks though. Mixing RAM will sometimes work, with all the memory running at the timings of the slowest RAM. However, I've experienced even a different revision of the same memory not playing well when run alongside another kit.

What's the current memory you're using?

I thought I was freaking out a bit but when I went to the mobo specs and saw dual channel I thought maybe I was stuffed and needed to see quad channel there.

Corsair CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9 Vengeance version 2.12 in now and it's quite cheap at the moment so I was going to double up.

If you can get the 2.12 revision again you'll be fine. I ran 4 x sticks of that very memory on Z68 absolutely hassle free.

If it is a different version the best thing to do will be try it and see. If it doesn't work initially, swap the position of the sticks around and try manual timings instead of XMP.

It's not for gaming,I'm going to start using VM's a bit more and it's reserve RAM in case my meanderings get complicated.

The RAM arrived,version 4.19.

Added it in,turned on and all ok so far, showing as 16GB (15.7GB useable) in system properties.
