Will upgrading to a 2500k + do anything for BF3?

Probably best to upgrade the GFX... QX9650 is still a pretty beafy CPU with all that extra cache.

Stick a 6970 2gb in there atleast or a 7950 when it arrives and you will see a large difference.

Ultra textures require 2gb VRAM.

I had no problems on ultra skyrim and 1920x1080 with x58 and 920@ stock, noticed no real improvement going to 2600k and asus z68v pro either and using 5870 vapor x,I'd say your memory is your weakest link atm

you wont notice any diff upgrading the cpu because your 5870 is being maxed out with the QX9650.

So by upgrading the cpu, your just bottlenecking it, as the gpu cant run any faster, as its running at full tilt with your current cpu.

As title states, will I get any framerate increase by upgrading to a 2500k or greater, but keeping my 5870?

What settings are you playing at?

Try the defaults of Ultra, High, Medium and perhaps even low.

You should see a significant increase in FPS as you turn down the settings. If you find it's not any faster at medium/low setting then it's your CPU. If the settings do unleash speed then it's your GPU.

With medium settings and SLI I get well over 100 fps constantly with an I5. (78 fps @ ultra) I was getting about 40 fps medium or low with a 3.6Ghz Q6600 but then I had a n750i chipset.

BF3 multiplayer can eat a fair bit of CPU power despite the 'expert' reviews.

My 5870 is the 2gb variaty.

When I choose auto settings, it selects all high with textures on ultra.

In fairness it plays fine, but I tired putting it on ultra settings (no msaa) and it plays fine, but its the menu screens that seem to lag.

But I dont think the 69xx series are much faster then a 5870? So if you want a huge performance increase I would go for a GTX570/580, or 79xx series.

I went from a Q6600 @ 3.5 to this i5 750. Quite a major performance change in BF3.

You wont see hardly and diff with a avg performing gpu..... Why do ppl forget this always:eek:

Like I said in one of the other threads on here............

I upgraded from a e8400 and the performance in games wernt huge as my 6950 was almost maxed out with the e8400

If I upgraded to a GTX580 gpu when I upgraded my system, I would notice a huge, huge increase in games, as a gtx580 is miles faster then the 6950 and Im guessing gpu would still be bottlenecking cpu, I dont now how much faster a gpu would have to be to bottleneck a 2500k ? Im guessing if you had 2 gtx580's, that might bottleneck the cpu( basiclly gpu's wouldnt be able to run at full tilt as they will be waiting for instructions from cpu all the time)

At the moment cos your gpu is being maxed out by your cpu, upgrading your cpu wont make a blind bit of diff in games, as your gpu cant go any faster

Upgrade the cpu as you will have more and better ram plus much faster cpu which can overclock higher with a mother board which will support Sata3 to get the most out off your M4

My 580GTX handles Ultra textures perfectly well with a min of 42fps and an average of 55fps so you definately do not need 2gig of video memory for ultra textures (CPU = 2500K @ 4.2)

Remember when DICE claimed you need 2xGTX580's to run the game at its best. Not true it turned out lol

Well 55FPS average isn't optimal....

Your system is the dream gaming rig, and yeah sli/crossfire is abit hit and miss,, yeah you might have stupidly high fps, but their prob not constant with sli/crossfire... 1 gpu all the way with me:cool:

If he upgrades either cpu or gpu, he'll have a large bottleneck nomatter what,, so you have 3 choices here.....
1. Upgrade cpu but dont expect much of a boost in fps, but the fps maybe more constant.
2. Upgrade gpu, gain quite a big boost in fps in games, but the gpu wont be able to run at full speed if you get higher then a 6970, as cpu will be letting the side down
3. upgrade both gpu and cpu, gain a huge fps in games if you go higher then a 6970, as the gpu being able to run maxed out without the cpu slowing gpu down at all... But it costs loads more.

Me,, Im happy with my 6950@stock and so what if its holding my 2500k back loads. Its a good thing in my eyes, as when the time comes when the 6950 starts to chug in games, at least I know my cpu can handle a much faster gpu before there becomes any sign of a bottleneck because of cpu.
