Hey all, sorry for yet another Vista thread, i was looking to buy Vista asap and am thinking of the Homer Premium instead of Ultimate for now, but not sure if it'll be missing any features, the main uses of my pc are:

  • Internet Usage
Work (I work form home) so Net Usage there, Office
    Office Usage
    Gaming (Mainly world of warcraft)
Home network via router/hub on workgroup
Sharing files & printers at home with other pcs
Linkup to Xbox 360 for music sharing
    Torrents & newsgroups

The only thing i'm unsure of really is the networking option, but i'm hoping Home Premium should suffice & more?

Also, i was thinking about maybe getting a dual core Socket 939 Cpu, so an X2 or Opty, if i got the OEM of Vista Home Premium then upgraded my CPU that would invalidate it wouldn't it?

Just trying to think what the most cost efficient choice will be, without sarificing any of my pc's usage :)

Thanks!

only thing Vista ultimate has, that might interest you (that home premium doesnt have)

Domain Support
Remote Desktop
Bit Locker Encryption programme

if you have to ask yourself what they are, and whether you need them, then you dont. Home premium will be fine :)

with regards OEM and retail. Your OEM license is invalidated if you change motherboard. not CPU

but you usually change them both at the same time. So if you're thinking about chaning CPU + mobo (to say Core 2 Duo) dont buy OEM

I think the last line of your message summed it up :D hehe thanks for making me feel all dumb! :P

Domain Support - Using workgroup at home, so ok there
Remote Desktop - I use tightvnc
Bit Locker Encryption programme - *gets dictionary* *cries*

Ah, ok, thanks! tbh i'm happy with my system now, but might try in a dual core Socket 939 if Vista struggles at all with the current system!

And at £72 it looks good!!

Thanks again mate!

see above amendment

if your keeping your mobo but changing from Single Core Skt 939 to dual core

your OEM copy is still valid

but if you change mobo to a Core 2 Duo one (or any other mobo for that matter), your OEM is invalid and you'll need to buy another copy

If you intend to keep your copy of Vista for many years ,and upgrade every 2 years or so. You need Retail.

Yep, ammendment seen!

Guess if thinking long term i'll have to give it some extra thought, OEM doesn't get all support & updates either does it, just as is? Or was that just something i read somewhere! :)

You get all the updates with OEM. Its just the same as retail apart from you can only install on one pc/motherboard.

The System Image Backup feature might be useful - only available with the Business & Ultimate editions.

There are all sorts of problems creating Ghost images apparently at the moment so the above could be a nice tool to have access to.

vista retail is 3x the price of oem tho

i have core2duo allready only just upgrade before xmas

i figure if i upgrade mb in say 12-18months time then ill buy another oem copy with perhaps a service pack on the disk then again another 12-18months down the line .

However i'll have spent the same amount of cash but have the newest version of vista with maybe a couple of service packs on the DVD and can still be using the other versions legitimately as media servers or mce pc's.

Thats my take on the choice after buying retail for XP and then having to bugger about with slipstreaming service packs etc .

Unless you upgrade every 2 years on different PCs like I do(have 3 PCs),then going for a new OEM licence for each PC makes sense.

Well, i've decided i'm gonna go OEM for now, just gotta decide on 64 or 32 bit now! :)

You mnay as well got for x64. I installed it a couple of days ago and not had any problems at all - picked up all my drivers, everything working perfectly.

Thanks, think i'm gonna go for that now...hmm...ultimate...£129 vs £72...

That's what I've got too, definitely worth it. Even if I do change my motherboard it won't be for another 2-3 years. If I have to buy another OEM Vista then it'll still have been cheaper than buying retail.

Cool, slightly crapping it after cnet vista checker scanned my system as a pretty crappy score, but the ones on ms.com and ati.com gave me a thumbs up, so i'll see how things go, failing that i'll slip a X2 4600 in there :D

Your PC will be able to run Vista with no problems though your graphics card may be lowering your score too. I've got an X850 sitting in the cupboard which I only used once then replaced with a 9800 Pro which I preferred!!

Do MS offer a separate RDP program for Vista or do I need to buy ultimate to get Remote Desktop? I know with 2000 Pro you could install MS RDP client for remote desktop.

You get RDP with Premium, its just that Ultimate allows you to connect to your PC inbounds... Premium allows you to connect to another external PC outbounds.
