Will Windows 7 improve performance

Ugly interface? Clearly you didn't use common sense when installing it then!

And voice confirmation messages can be turned off with a few clicks.

Security Essentials is good for the average user but it's not good for big folder browsing especially over LAN environments because it takes far too long and uses near 100% CPU heuristic scanning files - a bug that has been in MSE since the BETA.

Tried and tested, with Avast 5 Beta on my machine browsing large folders is no longer a problem where as with MSE there is a delay.

I have a spare copy of Win7 thanks to the student offer and I was thinking about installing it on my parent's PC, as it chugs under vista.

It doesn't handle running firefox and itunes at the same time, let alone adding Word into the equation. I've disabled even the aero basic theme and I am using the windows basic theme.

So, will I see a performance increase if I upgrade to win7, or would it be a waste?

The spec:

Athlon x2 4000+ 64
2Gb Ram
xfx 8400gs 512Mb
320 gb HDD

That system should be perfectly adequate for Vista. Vista runs OK on my relatively crap laptop [celeron, 2GB RAM], so you have an underlying issue somewhere.

Your parents PC would be fine for 7. My ancient desktop system [athlon 64 3.2, 1GB RAM] runs it OK with Aero etc.

Vista runs like a 2 legged dog on 2gb ram, imo

Can't say I had that problem. Was running Vista on 2GB RAM for around 2 years with no issues and was perfectly fine. No lags doing anything that I run on a day to day basis.

Of course running newer games and video rendering etc was slow but everything else was fast enough.
