so i had to replace my 2600 as i was having memory issues, which ended up being down to a broken pin, the processor was effecting 2 of 4 slots meaning no proper running dual channel and not all the memory available just detected, but worked fine in single channel, so as it still works it seems a waste to get rid, so im going to build a system, however whats the likely hood both slots on a 2 slot board wouldnt work if i was to purchase one?

I guess it depends which channel it is. I would assume the primary slots are used in a 2 channel board, which would be the same used for the primary 2 slots in a 4 slot board.

thanks for reply.

well i guess on any motherboard id use the slot closest to the cpu, i have always done that, but of the limits id have i only need the 1 slot to work and take either 8 or 16gb.

Always check the motherboard manual for which DIMM slots to use.

Normally, for a motherboard with 4 DIMM slots it's:
  • A2 for 1 stick of RAM
  • A2/B2 for 2 sticks of RAM
If you don't use the correct DIMM slots, you might encounter some problems.
