So it looks like our condo building is being forced into using WIMAX from the local ISP. Any idea how this will be for playing fps shooters like Quake Live and Unreal Tourney? I'm worried it's going to be pretty flakey :(

They getting rid of wired completley?

If it's a reliable, decent setup then you shouldn't lag in online games as wireless can give more than enough throughput for games, but it could potentially be extremely bad unfortunately (interferences etc.)

Yeah, damn Condo Association pulled a fast one

I wouldn't be as worried if I only played MMO's - but Quake needs ultra low, ultra stable latency and no dropped packets. I don't think any kind of wireless can offer that, right?

Yeah, a reliable wireless connection can definitely offer a stable connection with no dropped packets.

However, as the signal is covering an entire building (or at least the signals emitted from multiple access points will cover the building) then there could be a significant amount of interference (unless there's some kind of wireless that doesn't get interfered by anything that I haven't heard about :p).

I don't really understand why they'd completley disconnect all the wired connections if the infrastructure is already there, are their ISP refusing to offer them wired services and instead giving wireless

A properly set up wireless connection can be very stable, obviously there is a chance of interference and dropping packets but if it is done properly then there should be no real issues.

Wimax as a technology is certainly having teething troubles (Nortel recently dropped their wimax product line) though there are a lot of large scale successful deployments all over the place. As long as whoever the provider is does a proper job with the instal at both ends then really it can work very very well.

It makes no sense to me either. From what I can gather, they got a good deal and everybody in the building will end up paying less than they did to their individual ISP's. But surely the ISP that is giving us WIMAX could give us a similar large package deal for a conventional service as well

Fortunately, I've just discovered I may be able to opt out for now, due to various reasons I won't bore you with :)

It depends here.
Are we talking WiMax 802.11e or WiFi 802.11a/g/n?

As previous posts a properly setup WiMax install / network would be extremely reliable and great for gaming, better than adsl due to interleaving, prob not as good as cable, fibre with a good upload.

Copper has its limitations and especially at high capacity.
