Win 10 blank screen with cursor _ top left of screen after upgrade?

I have a friend who's tried to upgrade and has been left with a screen that keeps clearing (like a reboot) but gets just a cursor _ in the top left corner of the screen on power up / reset, nothing else.

Pressing f8 etc has no effect, the upgrade was done over the top of her old win 7 and thus she has no media to try again with....


It's a Toshiba laptop, if I press f2 with this screen and cursor, the laptop goes into its bios which tells me it isn't seeing or trying to boot to the new win 10, it's been doing this since she started the upgrade process (and now wishes she hadn't!)

Any help / suggestions appreciated.

are you able to create a W10 USb stick and boot from that, see if it gives you the option to run a repair?

No, the win 10 upgrade was done after downloading, the machine has restarted once the install completed and now won't boot to hard drive, DVD or USB - ive downloaded a Win 7 64bit ISO and I've created bootable of both USB and DVD to try to reinstall 7, the laptops owner installed the 10 upgrade thinking it was a regular update(!)

She's in her 70's and tbh didn't know any different tbh, she didn't even realise she was upgrading to 10 until she explains to me what she'd done!

I've created a separate thread in the laptop section, I think my problem lies with Toshiba's bios rather than Win 10 tbh, I think safe boot is enabled and has screwed things up with the 10 upgrade process...
