Win 10 BSOD - Random restarts

I have a PC that I put together myself a couple of years ago.

Whilst running Win 7 I had no issues at all, it all started when I upgraded to Win 10.

I re-installed Win 10 (for about the 10th time!) about 2 weeks before Xmas. It was running just fine until yesterday, when the PC froze momentarily and gave me the BSOD with the "collecting information" and stop code (sorry can't remember what it was, I believe it was Memory management). I've been here many times before...

This issue has been plaguing me for months now. Ultimately the PC degrades and then eventually it won't restart at all. Along the way you get messages saying it wants to fix your hard drive at start up etc etc.

I believe it is possibly a driver associated with controlling the HDD. Possibly the Intel engine management thingy. Why? I have noticed a sound coming from the PC which I am positive is the HDD restarting/resetting, shortly afterwards the machine pauses... then BSOD. I have run software to update drivers, I have used drivers that came with the motherboard (ASUS H81M-C) installation disk and on other occasions I have let Windows manage the entire process. Reading about on various forums there appears to be an issue in the past with this, but maybe it has been fixed and I'm clutching at straws?

Over the last few months I have changed PSU (had a spare one), reseated memory and graphics card, checked for loose plugs etc., disconnected DVD drive and anything else that I wasn't using, nothing helped. I have even changed the SATA leads. I also have 4 HDD's, 2 I bought believing that the others had died, they hadn't, I have used different HDD's each time I have reinstalled deliberately, no difference.

No idea what to try, it's driving me nuts and I really don't know what I should try next.:(

Basic info:-
Intel i3 3.6Ghz, 8Gb RAM, ASUS H81M-C mobo, SATA HDD's,

Would you be able to to open your event viewer when this issue occurs and have a look at the errors shown around that time in the 'Administrative Templates'?

Are you able to still use the PC after this issue occurs and it restarted?

What Hard Drives are you using? How old are they? Possibly could be a dying HDD. I would suggest buy an SSD and installing the OS as a clean install onto here and then seeing if this lasts and corrects the issue. Really I would recommend getting an SSD anyway as you will see a massive increase in speeds on the PC.

Or if you are able to, you could downgrade or re-install Win 7 and see if the issue occurs on Win 7 as well. Could well be a coincident that it just happened when upgrading, or the upgrade stressed HDD if they are old causing them to start failing.

Hi Harvey,

Not familiar with event viewer, I have had cause to use it in the past (followed instructions basically), but not at all knowledgeable about it, or how to even open it!

HDD's are anything from 3 months to 3 years old at a guess. I've been using a different one each time I reinstall, same problem crops up. Sometimes it manifests itself a week or two after a fresh install, other times it can be just a day or two.

The PC will reboot and then is usuable... but after so many restarts it appears that the HDD is so "corrupted" that it is unable to and all I get is rescue screens etc.

I'm convinced it is something to do with the drivers for the HDD's, but willing to look at other possibilities!

I have original (genuine) Win7 and Win10 installation DVD's, can install either. Yes I could try Win7 again next time.

cheers:)

If you type event viewer in the windows search bar you will be able to open it. Then on the left you will see Administrative templates. click this and it shows all major issues

Also I would suggest picking up an SSD new drive and then installing you Win 10 on this.

Had a BSOD about an hour ago.... "Page_Fault_in_nonpaged_area".:( (The one before that which I referred to in the OP was "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL", I just found where I had written it down!).

Just prior to that Firefox crashed.

I believe this is what you wanted me to show Harvey:- https://s18.postimg.org/6fqt5zxa1/2018-01-09.png

I've been reading that it might be a RAM issue.

I will have a look at SSD drives, but I'd still like to know what is causing this issue.

How often is this issue happening? I have had very similar problem and thought it was my HDD for ages, but i believe it eneded up being my RAM.

Sometimes my PC would shut down on its own, I would power it on and it will not find boot device... Had to load into BIOS to set my boot menu again. Would work fine after that.

Sometimes my PC sometimes would not start and just get powering on and straight off... had to remove 2 of my 4 sticks of RAM, power the machine on which got it working. Then power down and install the 2 sticks again and it would work fine for ages after that.

What is your RAM setup? Are you able to remove some of your modules to test, only problem is if this issue is not something that is happening often.

Have you ever added more RAM to your machine?

Just had another BSOD "MEMORY_MANAGEMENT" and whilst I was typing it up had another "KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE".

No new RAM Harvey, 2 x 4GB which I've never touched (except to re-seat).

As for frequency, from fresh install to now is about 2 weeks, so a fortnight trouble free and now it all kicks off again.

Thats why its strange as if it was RAM causing the issue I would expect it to have issues all the time, not to be fine after a clean install.

That then makes me thing HDD issue again, You will be wanting an SSD anyway because of the massive performance increase for the price, so hopefully you can clean install onto an SSD and this will resolve the issue if it is an HDD issue.

I was reading one of the forums about this type of fault and someone suggested running Windows memory diagnostic tool. First I'd ever heard of it! Anyway... ran it and it came up with a fault much to my surprise.

Today I bought a couple of new sticks of RAM. I have formatted my HDD and I'm now running on a fresh install of WIN10.

Fingers crossed!:p

P.S. I did have a look at the SSD's Harvey, a bit rich for me right now, maybe in a couple of months, I want to see whether this new RAM fixes the problem first.;)

That's great news mate! Yep I have used the memory test but it has never shown any error in my experience when I've had faulty RAM so never suggested using to anyone. I will reconsider now I know of someone who it works with.

Good luck anyway and defiantly let me know if it all gets back working.

I have had a very similar sounding problem with my PC since I built it in June 2016. Same BSOD's but only very rarely, like anywhere between 4-8 weeks. Sometimes I might have 2-3 in a few days then none for weeks. I ran memtest for 19 hours with 8 of 8 passes without any errors. Mine only happens when surfing the net and never during gaming sessions.

I’ve had similar issues like described above but usually when I’m not using my PC it dies and I have to reset my boot menu in BIOS to get it to boot
