Behind you... Naked!
I am wondering about using 2008 Server as a WorkStation PC.

Ok, clearly its easily done, but there are obvious as well as less obvious issues.

Some software requires me to use the Server versions of them, such as AntiVirus, DeFragger and so on... Fine, I can live with that to a point, however I have a number of games that moan at me for trying to install them on a Server O/S

So...

I was wondering if its at all possible for me to actually stop it beign a Server O/S and set it to become a Workstation so that it is no longer a Server and give me access o these apps again?

Windows 7?
Both have the same codebase, unless there are specific programs requiring a Server OS

Alternatively, native boot to Win7 and have Server2k8 as a VM

I think we would need more information on what you want to achieve by running Server 2008 instead of a workstation OS, however I will point out one less obvious caveat. If you're planning on using Hyper-V you won't be able to game on it at the same time, as Hyper-V interferes with what Microsoft refer to as "high performance accelerated graphics adapters". KB article 961661 explains the issue and why it happens. There are workarounds, but they're not especially convenient; essentially, you won't be able to have VMs running while gaming.

Ok sorry.

Well, what has happened is simply that I am a knob.

What I have, is all the PCs on my LAN are in the process of upgrading. They were all on XP64 then I went to Vista on a couple but jumped over to Win7, so they have a mixed bag, but they were going to end up all running Win7/64

Then, a mate offered me Windows Server 2008 for my old Licences. I kept one of XP, XP64, VistaU64, and Win7 but he had all the others and he told me that this Server would give me Windows 7 on all my PCs plus any more that I got hold of.

But it simpy does not.

So...

I was wodnering about using it anyway, however a load of the stuff that I want to run, keeps filing to install or run and instead, it brings up a dialog box stating that it wont run on Server Operating systems.

Can you see my error?
I have already posted about the stupidity of getting Server 2008 so please lets not even go there, I am only trying Dammage limitation here, and making the best use of what I have

I understand now. I was initially under the impression that you'd planned to use Server 2008 for a specific reason, and were hoping to have the system do double duty as your workstation. I am not aware of any way to fool software into installing on an unsupported version of Windows, but it's probably possible. Sorry I can't give you more specific help but I was under the assumption that you wanted to make your installation of Server 2008 as similar to Windows 7 as possible (i.e enabling themes to get Aero effects, disabling the Shutdown Event Tracker etc).

I agree... Thats how Id have seen it too, I mean, what moron would go out and get Windows 2008 Server to not want it as a server?

Ok, me, but thats not what I thought I was doing...

I have however enabled themes and Areo is running and the shutdown event tracker doesnt bother me.

Im wondering about ( unless I have lost the plot here ) but is there Windows 2008 Workstation? Can I make a custom disk from this one using VLITE? - I might have a go just to see but I will probably end up doing loads and not being successful.

I might just be better off putting the O/S up for sale instead!
