The main reason is to use more ram, if you have 4GB or more in your system then go down the 64bit route you will find everything will run a lot faster.
My main Desktop is a bit dated now but with Win 7 x64 everything is very fast and I can have many apps open at once with out worrying my system will slow down.
I wouldn't go as far as saying 64 bit is a lot faster (I've used both on the same hardware and I'd challenge anyone to tell which version they were running just by using them) but 64 bit does perform better under certain conditions.
Aside from being able to support more memory, 64 bit editions of Windows are more resistant to certain types of malware.
