My missus is after a laptop after struggling with her old pc for years, looking at the new Dell i3/i5 laptops they come with Windows 7 64 bit, how is it better than the 32 bit operating system, will only certain software run on win64 bit, is she gonna have problems using her old software on it? thx.

I haven't had any problems running anything on 64 bit. I always go for 64 bit if its supported.

Yup main benefit for 64bit over 32bit is memory addressing
32bit maximum is 4Gb, which includes and graphics memory, so if you have 4gb memory and 1gb graphics you will only be using 3gb of your memory :)

The laptop we are looking at with Win7 64bit has 3gb of ddr3 ram, will that be ok? I know more is better but should 3gb run things ok? thx.

Yep that will be fine using 64bit :)

Using a 64bit OS with <= 2G of memory isn't a great use of resources and could slow performance.

<= 2GB memory use 32bit
>2GB memory use 64bit
