ok, my pc has been missing dll files and acting strangely for about 3 weeks now, I installed reg repair and ran it , it fixed a number of problems but then wanted to restart the computer, it restarted and displayed the screen dump (blue screen) and then restarted telling me windows failed to start and offering me the recovery service etc however this has failed to work and now im really not sure what to do.

My first option im thinking is to put the win 7 disc in and allow it to repair the current installation of windows.

I would try a startup repair first of all to hopefully get your system to boot again with any luck. Once your up and running again click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. Type sfc /scannow and hit enter. After running this see how it goes. If the issue keeps happening then I would look to do a format and reinstall tbh.

On another note - I would be very cautious of using any 3rd party programs that promise to repair your registry - more often than not they do more harm than good.

thanks for the advice, unfortunatly the startup repair tool didnt manage to work :(.

I was thinking about putting a fresh copy of windows onto a seperate harddisc, and then accessing the one that currently playing up as a slave and just taking all the important info off it.

does that seem a viable option.

Indeed but there's an easier option under these circumstances and that's using a Linux live CD to boot your system with and then grab whatever files you need from your HDD. I use Knoppix for example...
