Occassionally when I boot up and enter the user password I get an error message stating it can't find the profile. It then tries to give me a default desktop instead of my usual one. If I leave the PC switched off a while, then try again it sorts itself out. WTF?!

I understand that I can do that, but that doesn't address the issue does it?

I want to understand why this issue is occuring.

I have also remembered that although it says 7100 on the desktop, it's 72XX - I upgraded it a few weeks ago.

Although this doesn't help you in the slightest, my previous machine with a vista64bit install did exactly the same thing, for no aparent reason, maybe once every 8 or 10 weeks, it would load into a base profile, not into my own. Rebooting immediately brought me back to the correct profile, nothing seemed missing or damage or corrupt. I put it down to some failure within the shutdown process not triggering a registry key, but never investigated further.

I rebuilt the machine, new stuff, reinstalled, and haven't seen it since.

I am using the 64 bit build as well. Interesting.

I was getting the user profile issue on a 32-bit 7100 install. Never got to the bottom of it though, just assumed it was something to do with the ancient PC I had it installed on.
