Win 7 activation with upgrade edition problem

Hey all

Just did a clean install on my new ssd using a win 7 upgrade disk. Stupidly i forgot there has to be an old os on there so now im stuck at the product key screen with it refusing to take my upgrade key. Rather than start again, install vista then install 7, can i use a mates full key then switch it to my upgrade key before activation? Or is installing vista first my only choice?

Leave the Product Key blank and click Next/Continue/OK/whatever. It will moan at you, but continue on. Once the installation is finished you can do one of two things.

1: Install Windows 7 again over the top of the install you just did, using your product key or
2: Search online for the registry trick.

This has been discussed a thousand times here and Google would have been your friend also. Method 1 is what Microsoft recommends.
