Win 7 boot delay.

A long story short.....

Bought Intel SSD. Installed in my system. Hassle getting Win 7 installed, but managed it eventually. System booted like there was no tomorrow. Next day, dead motherboard, Abit AX78. I`m sure it was just a coincidence

So, I`ve just finished installing a new Gigabyte motherboard GA-MA790X-UD3P. I`ve done a fresh install of Win 7 64bit on the SSD. Everything seems fine, but when I boot up, there is a good 10-15 second delay after the Windows animated logo appears. There is no HDD activity light, the machine just sits and waits. When activity resumes, I`m at the Windows desktop within a few seconds. I`m sure I didn`t have this delay when I was using my old hard drive, or when using my old motherboard. Could it be that this is a "feature" of Win 7 64bit ? Is this behaviour normal ?

For me this happens in vista and win7, and to some extent in xp too. I think its the ati driver in my case as windows boots at light speed as a fresh install.

When running a detailed boot log, it does halt at 'atipcie' driver for abit.

Thanks for the replies.

Indeed, I have a HD4850 card. I`m sure this "delay" didn`t happen when I was running Win7 32 bit on my old WD 640gb HDD. In fact, i`ve tried my old drive back in the machine, and there`s hardly any delay (the animation just about stops, then the HDD activity proceeds straight away). I`m beginning to wonder if it`s the 64bit version of Windows, or are the ATI drivers different for the 64bit version of Win 7 ? This pause in bootup is ruining what would be a lightning quick startup, and being the impatient type, it annoys me slightly.

I think I might try a Win7 32 bit install again.

I`ve now found the cause of the problem. Uninstalling the ATI drivers didn`t stop the pause. I suspected that it may be something to do with AHCI that I enabled when I installed Windows, as my old hard drive doesn`t have this delay in windows startup. In fact, there was hardly any difference in boot time between my new SSD with AHCI and my old HDD in Native IDE mode. So, I`ve just tried the SSD in Native IDE, wooooosh ! Hardly any pause at the Windows logo, and I`m at my desktop in seconds. Also, there is another delay when AHCI is enabled - the BIOS puts up a screen displaying the AHCI devices, which wastes another few seconds.

I`ve read that AHCI is "the future", but it seems there aren`t that many advantages for me to use it, and when I show my friends how good my SSD is, they`re not going to be too impressed if it takes just as long as a normal HDD to load Windows.

So, I`m sticking with Native IDE and Win7 64bit - for now !
