I am trying to do a fresh install of windows from a USB stick and when i get the part where i have to pick i drive to install onto its blank.
now i know i need to put the drivers onto a usb stick then tell windows to run the drivers so windows can see the drives i am wanting to install onto.
But what drivers do i need?

You have to create a custom Win 7 image. There is probably a tool that does this on the Asus site if you look. You can also Google this issue; it's a very common problem.

The best thing to do is just use Windows 10. You are crippling yourself by staying with a six year old OS.

yep i have used my win 10 upgrade so just need to install win 7 on the new system then i can upgrade again.
or pay £90 for a new usb drive and key

You can slipstream drivers into a custom Windows 7 ISO image, search and you'll find various tutorials, bit tedious. Alternatively press F6 during the Windows 7 install and have the SATA drivers on a USB stick. You might also be able to change the SATA controller mode to IDE or compatible rather than AHCI/RAID in the BIOS, not ideal for best performance.

Look under Win7 32/64 for the drivers below (MSI link above) and extract them to a USB key and try those after pressing F6 during the initial Windows 7 setup. It flashes up the option early in the setup process.

"On-Board SATA AHCI/RAID Drivers" - version 14.8.0.1042

If you have a Windows 7 retail key then you can use that to activate Windows 10 negating the need to install Windows 7 and upgrade.

i download win 10 to a usb stick but it tells me my key is wrong when i try t put it in

will win 10 on a usb stick 100% work? if so i will just buy a new copy from OcUK now.

^^^ Sorry I edited my post above as you were replying. The Key you have may be an OEM key which is why it is being refused.

this just got more fun. i put the drivers on a usb stick but when i put it in the os dose not fine the use sticks. it dose however find and let me browse the drives i an wanting to install onto.

Without buying a new Windows 10 key, I would :
Put Windows 7 on a USB stick and the SATA drivers on a folder on that same stick.
Go through OS install and when it doesnt see HDD, point to those drivers.
Install Windows 7, then upgrade to 10, and then clean install 10.
Bit long winded but works out with your win 7 key.

one post up from yours. i have tryed this and for some reason when i look for the usb stick on the list of drives it now listed.

You just skip putting in the key during install. Once Win 10 is installed you can then enter your key, if required.

i could not find an option to skip, i now know that where it say "i dont have a product key" is the option to skip.

Win 10 now installing. i will try and use my win 7 key if no joy i will buy a new one.
the boys system was stripped last week and he doing my head in to get this now one working for him.

If you don't have the Threshold 2 release on the USB stick, it won't accept the Win7 key, once you have 10 installed and the build 1511 build update, it should then accept it.

If you've upgraded then you don't have to go through the mess of installing windows 7 to upgrade to 10 again as it will still activate on a clean install without putting in a product key since verification is done through your hardware.

Also to use your windows 7 key to activate a windows 10 install it needs to have the latest updates included (I think that's 1511) to accept the key, so you've wasted money on that new key.

if i have a new system how would it activate on the hardware? the clue would be its a new system. so the last copy of windows was on my old system, you know the one with the old hardware.

do you think i didn't call microsoft before doing this? my old windows key was OEM. i thought it was retail but when i looked back in my OcUK item history it was indeed OEM that i paid for.

also the new key was a shocking £19 from a friend over at the NHS air ambulance, but if anyone from Microsoft asks i work for the NHS.... ;)
