Win 7 + iPod Classic ***SOLVED***

Couldn't see another topic like this and wasn't sure to post here or in Apple hardware, it's more a Windows problem though.

Does anyone else with Win 7 RTM use an iPod classic? I've installed the OS 3 times now and not a single time has the iPod been recognised.

In the beta, it saw it and installed drivers fine, but iTunes crashed on sync.

In the RC it saw it and installed drivers ok, it worked perfectly.

Now in the RTM, windows update see's it's an iPod and refuses to find drivers for it. Is this just MS being MS with Apple products again or have other people been unable to use the Classic on the RTM?

64 bit itunes, win 7 64 bit, have tried with 3 seperate installs of the RTM and all 3 times it's recognised the iPod as 'iPod' but refused to install any drivers for it.

Kenny, i read that guide a while back actually, hasn't helped

If I uninstall the drivers, i watch the hardware wizard go like thus:

Searching Windows Update for drivers...

Installing device drivers...

Failed

You might think this to be an odd question, and it probably is, but have you actually tried the device on any other machine?

It's worked and recognised fine on my dads PC, and worked on this machine on Vista x64 and the beta/rc builds of 7, its only the RTM that doesn't like it

Are you installing the RTM from the same ISO on each machine? Could be a corrupt driver file or similar.

My 80g classic works fine on my MSDN RTM.

I know you mentioned you've got it working on other PCs, but have you tried doing a hard reset on the iPod? I have to do this every now and then as my classic is a bit knacked.

Tried 2 hard resets and forcing disk mode, same problem.

Checking the device properties i get a yellow warning triangle and the error is

The device cannot start (Code 10)

Also Ash, Winamp won't work as it's not recognsing the hardware properly, nothing can use it.

Also tried a complete uninstall of all usb drivers, didn't help.

Have you tried media monkey ? also you may have to plug unplug a few times until it's recognised properly.

Messing about, i unplugged it at one point and got a message saying that 'iTunes will have to format your iPod for it to work correctly in Windows' so I plugged back in, it recognised it fine, hit ok, and suddenly It forgot it had recognised it and went back to Code 10 (Cannot start device)

It's a problem with the usb mass storage drivers, yet all other devices I own that use them, work fine.

Tried front ports, back ports, just installed win7 on another HDD, same thing happened there.

EDIT: Ok you guys are gonna kick me for this but it works now...

I was running the iPod cable through a usb extension cord so it would reach my desk, turns out that just using the white iPod cable solved the issue.

I feel so stupid now :(

EDIT again: Now I'm back where I was with the RC, iTunes locks up for a while when I try to sync and it disconnects my iPod (OK to disconnect message on iPod screen)

I don't want to have to use winamp or another software to sync the iPod as i've grown very used to iTunes, and have got my library set up with all the artwork applied etc which has taken months to get looking right (OCD'd it to hell) and don't want to chance losing this.
