Problems moving files from one hd to another hd, both internal but taking ages sometimes to transfer files. Never a problem with XP as I have a dual boot, but I was wondering if anybody has a possible sollution to this problem? I have looked a bit on the net with no joy so far.

TY in advance

E7400
GTX 260
P5QL with 4gig

both internal hd's are 1tb

if you have any AV software running, disable it temporarily and see if that makes a difference.

also, can you give us some indication of speeds? clicking the more details button in the move dialog will give an approximation.

Are you moving Large single volume files or multiple small files?
When you say it takes a long time how long for what size of data?
Are your hard drives SATA or PATA?
Are the partitions all on one disk or spread over multiple disks?

indexing service perhaps?
also have you checked if the harddisk possibly have some problems with reallocation sectors pending? Crystal Disk info might shed some light on the harddisks status

Sata..

My son is trying to move several (normally 20+) smaller files to other areas on the other hd.

I would be looking at the SMART data for both drives using CrystalDisk as mentioned above. Windows 7 is much more fussy about disk wear, have you looked in the event log to see if there are any IO or Disk operations that are suffering?

Both internal hd's are fine, but it shows my external 1tb is bad, so am now running chkdsk /f/r ... See what happens when it's done.

Event log would also be a good call here mate as it will give you wi IO error references.

yup it wont say the drive name though if there are any errors just something like disk0 so if you then goto Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Administrative Tools click computer management > disk management and you can see which drives are disk0 , disk 1 etc

You might want to right click each drive there goto properties and see if write cache is enabled to

Major problems with the external hd, so seeing what files i can move over to another hd before i reformat the thing :( .

As a side note, I strongly recommend using TeraCopy for file transfers. It's far superior to the default file manager that comes with Win 7.

TBH I have no problems copying files in win7 from a hdd to SSD and vice versa I always get the write/read times you would expect

One other thing the OP should check is that he has the latest drivers for his motherboard and windows isn't using some old driver or even a generic one

Teracopy is only worth while if your copying large quantities of data around if you ask me, Win7 handles smaller copy operations just fine.

ok.. reformatted the external drive and it shows as "bad" in CrystakDiskInfo; even ran chkdsk to scan drive and repair, but still showing bad in above program.

Choices? The external hd is a Samsung HD103SI 1000.2GB

Is the drive then beyond any help or is there more i can do?

TY

The real question is do you want to risk putting important data (what data isn't important?) on a drive that is at a higher risk of failure?

What do the Samsung tools say about the drive?

I am thinking that the best thing might be to pull the hd out of its enclosure and hook it up to my pc to see if this works..
