I would check all the cables to the drive and maybe try a different sata port. Had anything been done to the pc before this happened? Also check the bios to see if its seen in there otherwise it might be a faulty drive.
Al so try device manager, does the drive open if you press the eject button?
also may sound silly but make sure power options are not set to power saver.
had a laptop with a CD drive keep disappearing and it was down to power saving. to change it go to control panel and then power options, change to high performance
I don't know if it's is related but the only thing I installed recently was a Wacom Intuos 4 Tablet which gave me the dreaded driver mismatch error because I have more than one hard drive. I ended up installing the driver in safe mode to correct the issue. I also installed a new GPU so I think I had better check the sata cables. Yes the drive receives power and does open.
