Hi all,

What is the consesus here for the O/S to use for work environment. I have new PCs to install that come with both win 7 pro and win 8.1 pro licence. Which would be the best O/S to use for standard office use?

Thanks in advance :)

Just moved on to 8.1, from 7 Ultimate, last night myself.

Still getting used to the UI differences even though I've been exposed to Win 8 for ages now.

Frankly I think God alone knows why they made the changes they did (the search was executed perfectly in Win 7) however you do get used to them.

Time to move on now I think - Win 8 has matured past most issues.

If you want a hassle free life - windows 7
If you want to be cool and say my enterprise runs the latest and greatest - 8.1, but you will waste many an hour helping users and developers get stuff to run properly.. even finding stuff!!! :(

7 if you want an OS that out the box has what looks like a decently designed window UI rather than 8 which looks like a cheap knock off of Windows 7.

8 does have some significant increases to security and performance on low to mid range hardware which might be useful.

I'd personally go with 7 as by the time I'm done with making 8 useful to me I've basically recreated windows 7 anyhow though the performance enhancements in 8 aren't to be sniffed at if you don't have the latest and greatest hardware.

When I loaded up Windows Defender in 8 for the first time I honestly thought for a moment I'd been infected with something that had replaced it with a fake version it looks that dodgy and cheap compared to the one in 7.

I'd try W8 but be prepared to go back to W7 in case you don't like it.

I've all but given up trying to force myself onto W8.

Win8.1 for sure since Win7 is already 5 years old plus you have improved security on Win8.1 as well so always a good thing for a work environment.

8.1, it's a nice OS, Metro does take a little getting used to but after a week or two you really won't find it a problem.

I love OblyTile, you might not want this for a work environment but I love how I can customise the tiles - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1899865

This is a poor reason for choosing 8 but I do love the copy/move dialog box and the little graph :)

new machines with core i3 CPUs and 4gb ram.

other machines have vista on them.

If all they are doing is going on the internet and launching Office then 8.1 is absolutely fine. It takes about 30 seconds (literally) to configure a user account to boot to desktop, disable the upper hot corners, and set the desktop applications (media centre, picture viewer etc.) as the defaults which would be my recommendation.

If the rest were on 7 I would have suggested keeping them all the same but as it stands you're running a mixed environment anyway.

We just finally updated at work today to Windows 7 having run a mixture of XP and even some ME machines still.

I mentioned about 8 and apparently it "confuses too many users" and we won't be updating to any OS that uses that kind of model, ever, period lol.

Don't take this the wrong way but I sometimes wonder if some staff have any intelligence or should they be working in the office environment if they can't do the job or can't adapt to something new.
