win 7 product ID issue

A week ago my brother got a new Dell laptop with win 7 on it, but due to all the **** that they install on it by default, he wanted to format and reinstall fresh. As it didn't come with a Win 7 CD he used mine (same version of win 7), and the key from the sticker on the base of his laptop to activate it. 1 week later and now he is getting a message about the product ID.

My guess would be that the sticker on the laptop is a activation key for a OEM version of windows, and my installer CD installed a retail version of Win 7 rather than OEM, so although the activation key is legit, it isn't for the retail version of win 7. So is there any way to sort this out? can the Product ID be changed so that it matches the correct type to be used with this activation key?

The activation key is perfectly legit so there must be a way of reinstalling a fresh copy of windows and using that activation key.

The OEM Dell copy of windows 7 has a certificate which must match the SLIC 2.1 in the Bios. All you need is a Dell copy of Windows 7 ( Edition/Version suitable to the serial) and that's it sorted. What edition is he using? Obviously 64 bit.

Doesn't help his problem cos' the Dell version will install all the bs.

Well my brother just re-entered his win 7 home premium OEM key (same one he used previously) and now it's saying that it's a genuine copy of windows (when previously it just said an error about product ID). I just hope this won't do the same thing that happened when this key was entered during installation and just throw up the error again in 7 days. If it does I'll need to try and find a proper solution.

When I've had this in the past using my Win 7 disc to re-install HP systems, ringing up the automated telephone activation line always got me activated.

It's happened to me during installation for Acer/HP/Samsung. So I just retried the key after the install in Control Panel, and then it activates fine.

'Generally' speaking, the Dell OS re-install CD's do not install all the **** to go with it. The **** that is installed is due to major corp's like Dell/HP/SONY!! is because they jsut image the laptops/pc's with it all.

Essentially the manufacture OS CD's are just copies of the OS, that are OEM's with specific cert's
