win 8.1 not recognising usb hd? and others

I got myself a external hard drive that connects to USB 3.

when I first got it connected it was failing to be recognised and then wouldn't install.

I had to go and get the USB drivers from the mobo website and install them. once this was done it worked fine
 
my usb3 memory stick works fine in the front.

my system is a titan scythe from ocuk. its a gigabyte z97x-sli MB.
for the moment i am transferring everything whilst its plugged in the back - i'll check the connections later (certainly sounds like that may be it, especially as the back connections direct to the mb seem to be working fine).
