I have 8pro since launch and quite happy

couple of questions:

- is this an update or should I think of it as a new OS install? let me clarify if I may. when I upgraded from Vista x64, I upgraded first time, but later found out that a lot of my drive space was for something like "old windows". useless waste of space and redid a clean install. I like my pc lean and mean. basically if I install 8.1 will it keep my current install files/programs or do I need to reformat and do a clean install?

- why do I need to go thru app store and not via win update?

planning on changing mobo cpu next year, so don't really want to fiddle with fresh install yet if I can avoid -> calling Win Activation services just because I changed some HW etc...

- if I stay on win8 pro for time being, will I still get win updates (security, drivers and all that jazz)?

thx for help

In answer to your questions.

-From reading other threads and posts over the internet, I'd suggest doing a fresh install if you can get the 8.1 media.

-I think MS may be trying to market 8.1 as a whole new OS, just giving it free to Windows 8 users. Not sure why it's unavailable on Windows Update though really.

-As far as I can tell Windows 8 should still receive updates, at least for the time being.

thx.

think I will wait. some seem to have had issues with update, not sure if its OS or them. anyway I am in no rush to update as things are fine with win 8 pro.

will probably do a clean install/update when I get new CPU/mobo

cheers
