win 8 pro upgrade

just been given a brand new unopened windows 8 pro upgrade, and iv tried following the instructions to upgrade my win 7 to it, but when i open ethe windows setup from this page http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/upgrade-product-key-only

when i enter my key its telling me the product key im entering is an upgrade key and cant be used to install win 8, im about to punch my screen, the page im on is about upgrading...

Use the correct place holder key during the installation.

Use your key to activate the OS once it's up and running.

See this if you have issues activating.

so if i were to re-install windows 8.1 using the links provided and use the placeholder you have on your google drive link, and try to use the lifehacker instructions, it should activate? the version i have seems to be an upgrade from windows 8 to 8.1 pro with media centre, or has it got to be 8 and then it upgrades to 8.1?
