Surprisingly I'm finding the Win 8 experience enjoyable and refreshing. I do have a couple of questions:

On the Start screen, when you click on the Internet Explorer tile, it opens up, bit not in IE10 style, Is there a reason for this?

Secondly when you open say Mail or any of the Start screen programs, is there a quick way to close after you've finished? I seem to keep having to go back to the front Start screen, swipe to the left and close stuff from there.. often not realising I had numerous things open?

hope this makes sense:p

You really only need to close metro apps if they're misbehaving. If they're not in use they get freeze dried and take up miniscule system resources.

At the moment I haven't taken anything off the Start menu that was preloaded, but the news tile, the picture tile, the weather tile.. how much of an impact on resources does it impact on say, gaming?
From what I've noticed when looking at the impressive looking Task Manager screen in desktop mode, CPU power or network usage seems to be pretty much 0%. I like the way it shows you Ethernet speed too. Getting off point now.
When in game I'd like to think the Start screen is frozen.. or not so?
I've not re-installed Kaspersky yet but that did have a gaming profile. I have to say though Windows is much faster using Microsoft's default Defender, but that could be the new OS.

Your mobile phone runs these types of applications in its sleep....

not too sure about that one.. do not own a Smart phone, still use 9.99 PAYG. I do intend to upgrade this Christmas, to a Win8 phone. I have seen my brothers Samsung S2.. yes I love to see Mame play arcade Robocop on a phone :D

I do appreciate the comment though. as enthusiast desktop users always want to know whats running in the background - comes with the terrritory. same if you had a smart phone, battery power is everything

Back to the Start screen question .. is there a way of seeing what you have open other than swiping to the left?

There are two versions of IE10 on windows 8 (Metro and Desktop) and what one the tile accesses depends on if internet explorer is set as the default browser or not (if it is then the tile will access the metro version and it will access the desktop version if it isn't, although the image on the tile will tell you that as well).

It's pretty much the same with the built in iso mounting program since if the default program isn't windows explorer (or file explorer since I can't remember what it said), then the mount option isn't made available.

I see, the touch version of IE. Thanks

Another question if I may,
when I use the Search facility, and then click on Settings.. no results are found? Only when i search for (in this case) Disk Cleanup I get results. Is this right that if you click on Settings via the Charm bar you get no results?

Windows Key + Tab is the keyboard shortcut, like Alt + Tab but just activates the metro app switcher and cycles through it.

More shortcuts here http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows-8/new-keyboard-shortcuts#1TC=t1 :)

thanks for sharing the links.
I've yet to buy Win 8 as I'm selling up my current rig, so I have non got a copy to reference -

On a touch screen, what is the swipe on the left hand side of the screen called, and what's the shortcut for that. I think it brings up things like system settings and stuff.

The left edge UI is the app switcher. On a touch screen you can swipe in and "flip" through open apps, or you can do a sort of weird shimmy in and back out (it's simpler than it sounds) to get the list-type view that you typically see on the desktop.
