From win 7 home premium to 8 pro. It says it keeps programs, files, and settings.

Is there anything it doesn't keep?

Also another question. If i got the disk image file from dreamspark. Is there a way of using the upgrade assistant instead of doing the clean iso install like it's wanting?

Thanks for any replies .

Not sure what it doesn't keep, but you can just burn the ISO onto the disk. There's an upgrade option when you boot onto it which does the same thing. If you really do want to use the upgrade assistant, then just use that, all you are just buying is the Win 8 Pro licence key from Dreamspark.

okay. cheers for the info.

whats the chance that i might lose stuff?

see the problem is I don't currently have an external hard drive to back stuff up.

and i'm worried i might lose my documents folder and my downloads folder if something goes wrong.

does it matter if these folders are huge? (couple of hundred gigabytes)

If you're worried about files, back them up. It's a simple as that.

If you don't have an external drive wait until you get one. An upgrade is quite drastic on the scale of things. A chance is a chance but you'd be a fool not to consider the worst case scenario.

It will probably be fine, but "probably" won't mean a thing nor make you feel better if you do accidentally overwrite the wrong stuff or something goes wonky.
