I am currently running a server as my everyday machine. I am guessing that around the world this setup would usually be running this O/S.

Basically i want to get the best from my setup. It might be old hat but its all 6 months old and works better than most would believe! I understand the Win Serv 2k3 can be quite restrictive on things you want to do, as its obviously not designed for pleasure puproses.

Currently run Windows XP Pro and will continue to do so indefinitly!;)

Old hat and 6 months old?

Anyway, server software isn't designed to be used on a workstation which is why it seems "restrictive". Stick with XP Pro, although it won't be indefinitely I imagine because it's getting pretty dated as it is.

Its gear that would have been used several years ago. I was lucky enough to find it all brand new in oct last year.

I don't think XP will ever die. Its the same as when it came out, a lot of people were probably still on 98 and loathed the idea of upgrading.

Never will Windows Vista get anywhere near my drives and you are correct its not designed to be used on its own but will it make more potential of the hardware setup?

Many will look at my setup and think no way, but in fairness its a damn site faster and more reliable than my mates dual core system!

Quite possibly but i think there will be a majority that are reluctant to change. Don't get me wrong i haven't tried Win 7 yet although if its anything like vista i won't be!

theres nothing wrong with vista unless youre trying to run it on a 1gb memory rust bucket.
