Hi,
Im having a few problems with setting up user accounts in WIN XP (sp2). Basically the antivirus software I have recently installed (F-Secure) takes up quite a lot of memory because of the several processes it runs in the background. I dont mind this when browsing net or working, but when playing games it has a nagative effect and slows my games down. So I want to create another user account that I'll use for games only. My question is, how do I set it up so that my main account (administrator) starts up with antivirus software running okay, but the games account starts up without the antivirus software running in background.

I tried changing stuff in the startup folder and 'services' tool (under administrative tools) but it either stops f-secure from running completely or doesnt stop it running in the games account.

any suggestions on a solution? Id prefer to keep using f-secure.

I can't really answer your problem and given you last sentence you probably don't want to hear this but, why use F-Secure anyway? Surely if it's using so much resources then it can't be very good. I use Antivir and it runs in the background no probs. And it's free.

Is Antivir a good antivirus program with good protection? Its not the end of the world if I have to get rid of f-secure, its just that it came recommended by my bank (I had a virus on my laptop recently that tried to get hold of my bank details via a false login screen).

Yeah but its 23 quid a year ;-) Anymore decent ones... that are free?
£27 inc VAT. Give the trial a go and see what you think, before writing it off due to huge 90p (or 30p, if you take 3 years at once) a month cost :)

The amount of systems we get in running AVG Free or similar with infections is quite shocking ;) The best free one I have heard of is Avast.

Ah, but I'm just a poor, underpaid soldier and cant afford such niceties! I will keep having a play round with f-secure to see if I can get that running smoother, if not I'll have a look at NOD32.

I use Avast 4.7Pro, really is a lot better then AVG. I had AVG on a few work PCs, decided to put Avast on it, and found all machines had a virus on them in any case, lol!

I always notice avast slows my PC down a lot in XP and Vista so I moved to nod32. I think AVG is fine aslong as you dont visit very dogey porn sites ect :P. BTW my my friend moved from norton to AVG and AVG found 60 viruses so it doesent miss loads.

I used Avast for a while but it slowed down my pc too. NOD32 is a very good program but I kept getting a lot of false positives with it. Antivir is a superb AV...and it's free.

Sixty! On one pc? I'm amazed it even worked.

I uninstalled f-secure and the game still runs really laggy so I dont think its that anyway. I've downloaded antivir and Im gonna give that a go til next week when my new hard drive arrives when I'll be reinstalling xp anyway. cheers for your help ;-)
