Hi all, a friend has got an HP PAVILION 410 with WinXP home OEM installed. I need to do a reinstall but not with the recovery cd or the 3gb hidden partition. I do have a copy of XP home retail, so the question is will his OEM key work with my retail copy, and would it be legal.

It would work yes, but i'm not too sure if its legal. I think he has to have his own copy of winXP with his own cd key.

Even if it did work it wouldn't be legal, you can't use the same key on two different machines (volume licenses excepted).

i dont think any of you have actually read this question properly. he states the laptop does have its own key. therefore it would be legal because he is using the key which came with the laptop.

however, the cd will not work, you require an oem disk if you have an oem key.

The key will not work with online activation and I don't think it would be legal as you have a license for the OEM edition of the software.
