Not sure how microsoft will handle this and I intend to ring them tomorrow. The spare pc is a Dell machine which came with the traditional green legitimate xp disk. I also once had the pc looked at by a local reputable pc shop for a virus and spyware problem. I also had to provide them with the accompanying xp license code for a reinstall. Anyhow-the same pc became infected again and I did the reformat etc myself. When I installed the operating system, the accompanying license details were rejected. I do not understand this as they had been previously accepted before. Does anybody know if Microsoft will issue me with a serial that works this time as I am a bit concerned that the computer shop may have continued to use the serial without permission? Some Indian bloke at Microsoft gave me another number to ring on Monday.

As long as you have installed what the license your oem sticker allows you to you should be fine. What key did you use to reinstall XP? And what media?

Well there is only the one I had that came with the disk-the holographic one which has five segments-is there supposed to be another? (I show my ignorance)
Hang on there was the Install ID as well which was generated by windows.

the one you use is on the sticker stuck to the side or the case. says windows xp home oem product key or something.

Thats the one is was using only it was stuck on the microsoft booklet so it wouldn't get lost. Daughter placed it on the booklet instead lol
Edit: Anyway, hopefully be sorted out tomorrow.

I have a similar problem.

I will probably need to ring Msoft as my key is being rejected for being used too many times.

I had a faulty mobo, so reinstalled xp pro 64 OEM several times, then found out that the mobo was faulty and purchased another (different mobo) from OC. I installed the OS and it runs like a dream now, but I cannot activate without phoning them.

I take it there will be no problem?

This isn't uncommon. Phone the MS product activation line using the number on the activation wizard. When the automatic activation fails, hold the line and you will be put through to a MS CS representative, explain your situation and they will activate your product.

Only just seen your post Burnsy and thanks for the response. Actually tried what you suggested today and got nowhere can you believe? Indian guy gave me another number:08706010100 and told me to choose options 2 and 5 on the phone-which I did. The only thing is after choosing option 5 the phone goes dead sigh! Anybody know if there is an email I can use to deal with this issue? Thanks.

What do those option equate to? I've never heard of having to ring another number

One was about vlk's forgot the others and just tried again but they change everything after 8pm :( The first number I rang was 0800 018 8354 where I was requested to provide the Install Id along with the accompanying disk serial. Having got nowhere with this the Indian guy gave me the other phone number and the already mentioned options. I didn't actually click the activate by telephone and so I might be better off doing this tomorrow and using those phone numbers instead. These are the ones you are referring to.
