I have a legal Win XP home edition CD and I use that fine with my computer. However, my friends PC needs windows xp reinstalling and I was wondering if I can use my cd with that computer and use the license code that's on the side of the branded computer?

i doubt it im sure, the CD will only accept that code.

although tell him to ring up the manfacturer of the PC thell send him the XP Disc free of charge.

You're CD will work in any machine, just don't use you're code on the friends machine....Otherwise that will be violating one law or another.

Use their code by all means, the CD is just a CD at the end of the day...Long as both the CD is a standard XP cd (Not a volume license cd or anything) and the code you use is a standard OEM/Retail one, it should be fine.

But as said, you can probably get a CD sent for free if you're not in a rush.

Depends on your disc. If it's a generic OEM disc, it should work. If it's an OEM disc for a particular PC manufacturer (HP or whoever), then it won't work.

Oh yeah, forgot about the lovely discs from HP and the like.

See which CD you have, and where the persons PC is from in that case...Then go from there.

OEM discs that manufacturers meddle with sometimes work, it depends if you want to take the chance.

The other month I was doing the usual favour for a friend's PC and they produced this Dell OEM disc for their Hewlett Packard computer. I pulled my face but just said "I'll see what I can do". Long story short it was a particularly long afternoon and I tried it on a whim not expecting anything (the PC was riddled with malware anyway) and hey presto, it worked fine.

Your milage may vary, I'm just saying stranger things have happened. And yes, it was all legit they had a license code affixed to the machine if anyone was wondering. :p

Yeah :)

Only reasons I can see it not working, is if they have all they're logos embedded into the cd...Like when you open properties for my computer and the like.

Try it, if it works it works, if it does not then ah well.

Your not breaching any licensing by obtaining media, torrent it if your using a legit key.
