win xp problem

At the start of xp pro it has the bar that indicates that its loading then later it turns to a black screen then few mins later it restarts, don't know what the problem is.

I can go in safe mode fine..

Basically all i did was open up a rar file it had a bugs i think avg sorted it out, restarted it. then suddenly the bar appears , then black screen, few secs later restarts back to the beginning. i can go on safe mode. don't know whats the cause of the problem.

yeh it said it healed it then said it needed a restart.

Anyways im back.

Well in safe mode it looks exactly how it would in normal mode.

i haven't installed any new drivers or programs but there was one file i downloaded, i can give you the link if im allowed to. that might be the key to the problem.

So you want me to wipeout everything in add/remove?

I have other Avs but not installed i dont think it will allow me to install in safe mode.

about the safe mode your spot on about res.

Will this mean that i will have to reinstall windows?
if so could you give me some guidance on formatting the pc and reinstallling it. I have windows xp home, xp pro service pack 2. I'll give you other details about hardware if neccessary.

it seems system restore won't work.
scanning doesn;t appear to help.
I don't think i have any other options.

Could you give me a guide on formatting, installing xp, hardware installations that are required?
