have had this winxp install for about 3 months, no problems, not installed any new software etc... and now it just wont boot. it just sits on the winxp splashscreen win the blue progress bar moving for an infinite period of time (left it overnight and it still wont get in)

safemod works fine, and i have tried 3 system restores, which all claim to be successful, but it just wont boot...

any ideas?

What a terribly helpful post.

Boot to safe mode, then Start->Run->"msconfig"->OK. On the "boot.ini" tab tick the "/BOOTLOG" checkbox. Click Apply & OK then reboot and attempt to boot Windows normally.

When it fails to boot, reboot again back into safe mode. Then Start->Run->"notepad c:\bootlog.txt"->OK (actually the filename might be "c:\windows\ntbtlog.txt", I can't remember which) to load up the log file.

If possible, upload that file somewhere so we can take a look. If not, tell us what the last few entries are in it. Usually the driver that is having problems loading will be the last one on its list.

PS: I assume you've tried unplugging additional hardware, e.g. sounds cards, all USB devices, printers and etc?

trying now !
