So i went to shut down my computer and as usual it begun to run through the updates. It has been on 26 of 42 now for atleast 45mins and im a little concerned. The computer is running fine, it is not frozen but i can't shut the system down. Ive never had a lot of updates that have taken more than 10/15 mins in total and that was only a one off occurrence. Is it supposed to take this long? Anyone have any suggestions?

Unless you are prepared to wait until the cows come home I would risk turning it off manually and if it boots to windows run system restore to before you installed the updates and try again.
