Not possible in this instance scotty, as the 'Ease of Access' window pops up when you press win+u, which kind of means that whatever the resolution, the displays monitor is handling it.
It also does this in safe mode (albeit at 640x480) so minus gpu drivers, yet still black screens. Which again points towards GPU failure or possibly but less likely psu 6-pin power failure.
Will check both later.

btw, does anyone know how long the warranties are on Gigabyte 4870's. Looking on ocuk they seem to be 2 years, if so, then happy days, if 1 year then **** !!!

Trying to get tech support from gigabyte is a test of perseverence in itself.

it's odd that the Ease of Access window pops up, to be honest this suggests that its a software problem to me, if the gfx card or psu was faulty then I wouldn't have thought you would be able to pull this up. Would definately try a repair install if you can, would suggest using a live CD (I use an old BartPE xp one) to gain access to the file system and backup any important data.

dave, mentioned in my 2nd mate that i'd tried the repair. It didn't find any errors, so there was nothing to fix.
I'd completely reformatted 3 days prior to the problems with ALL updates installed..

sorry mate, forgot you said that, this is a strange one, can't think of anything you haven't tried already then I'm afraid, does sound like a hardware issue again, hope you get some luck with gigabyte, I have no experience with them so can't help I'm afraid. Might be worth posting in the graphics card forum about gigabyte support, you may find some folks with experience there that can help.

Hmmm.... ok guys, its getting a little weirder now.
I put a 3870 into my rig and it wont boot at all, which is what the rig did with the 4870 in after taking it out and reseating it. Power comes on, but no post test or anything, can't even detect hdd activity, although i can feel the drive spinning.
I put the 4870 into the rig the 3870 came from and it all works fine.
So i think that proves the 4870 is fine.
So, could it be my psu or mobo?
Next i used a 4-pin to 6-pin molex connector to plug into the 3870 in my rig, thus bypassing the psu's dedicated 6-pin connectors. Still it won't post. There are no post errors/beeps, it just doesn't do anything but spin the case/gpu fans and light up relevent lights.
So can that remove the psu from the equation?
Next i reset the cmos as the rig is overclocked. Made no difference.
So, i'm now thinking its the mobo and NOT gpu psu.

What do you think?

edit: just a thought....this problem happened (as stated in OP) when i was using the IEEE1394 (firewire) connection to copy DV onto the pc. First time i've used that connection in this rig tbh. It would obviously have a bearing on the gpu load, but why its happened is obviously still a mystery.
