My mum is having an issue with her PC.
Last week she was unable to make any online puchases - secure sites were moaning about things and certificates.
I looked at her machine and noticed the date was completely wrong - talking January 2051 and the time was around 16hrs out as well.

Looked into the settings for the clock and it was set to syncronise with time.microsoft.com however when you tried to "update now" you'd get a time-out.
I foind a public time server at Manchester university and change her machine to syncronise with that - this seemed to work and the "update now" worked each and every time.

She has switched her computer on this morning and it has changed to January 14th 2015 22:17
Any idea why the time/date are restting to something completely wrong?

I'm not local to her computer, so cannot investigate things myself any further - just wondered if there was a knowledgebase article etc.

Cheers.

as Andy says change the CMOS battery on the motherboard.

this keeps the date and time in tact when the PC is off, when it get low or dies it then looses the time and date in the bios every time you turn off the PC
