Win7 defrag v Defraggler

Win7 analysis gives me 3% fragmented on my main C drive, and 0% fragmented on my smaller E and F drives.

Defraggler gives me 11% fragmented on C, 15% on E, 55% on F.

I wasn't aware of this until Phil2008 told me that windows defrag is no good and that I should try Defraggler. So all this time I thought my drives were barely fragmented.

How can windows defrag be so wrong?
 
Windows 7 defrag isn't "wrong" and it isn't "no good".

It does however ignore file fragments larger than 64MB in size, as consolidating them will give no significant performance benefit (which is, after all, the whole point of defragging). If you have many large files (eg videos), that's probably where the discrepancy arises.
 
Thanks Captain Crash. So are you saying that I can just go with the windows analysis of 3% fragmentation of my C drive because that's all that is necessary for any performance benefit, and that I don't really need to see or defrag the files that defraggler is showing?

Yup, that's exactly what I'm saying. :)

Some people get a warm fuzzy feeling from seeing a graphical display, and little coloured blocks being shuffled into continuous areas, but IMHO defragging is one of those basic system functions that's best left out of sight and out of mind as far as possible.

Exactly. Phil2008, whoever he is, is wrong and talking out of their arse. Windows defrag does more than well enough. It knows not to bother defragging 64MB chunks since it wont improve the performance of that file.

Just set the Windows defrag on a schedule [should be on by default] then forget about it. Defrag is nothing anyone should even be remotely concerned with these days.
