Win7 SP1 dumb question...

Heya,

Got a bit of a Noob question, if I may?

I'm doing my new self-build, but this is actually my first time installing Windows myself. I've installed Win7 Home 64-bit successfully, so all is well with that.
However, I'm having difficulties getting Service Pack 1 sorted.

1/. I tried letting Windows auto-update do it, but it keeps failing.
Powering on, the system tells me it's configuring Service Pack. It takes about an hour from 9% to reach 14% before restarting, but then repeats this a couple of times before telling me the install failed. It then periodically bugs me about updating Windows. If I enable the update, it schedules it for next power-up and does the same as above.

2/. I then thought to download SP1 from Microsoft's website and manually install the SP. I had the option of an ISO file and several MSI ones. Supposedly I should choose the x64 files, which I assume are the ones that say blahblah64.blah in the filenames, usually 'symbols' files?
However, running the ISO and attempting the MSIs, the former doesn't seem to change anything on my System Properties screen and the MSIs obviously need me to know where the thousands of resulting symbols folders should belong (not in the C: root, where it initially attempted).

Do I need to install these in a particular order/directory?
Have I got all the right files?

I've had a trawl through the MS forum/help pages but haven't found anything that seems to answer or relate to my queries.

Could anyone here please advise or perhaps whack up a quick plan-language Idiot's Guide for me, please?

Thanks for your time,
Tasky.

if u want the file version get the one with windows 7 x64 in it
or
download the ISO ( has x64 / 86 for windows 7 and also 2008 server x64)
