Apologies if I've missed a massive thread on this already, but I'm having a major headache installing SP1.

I keep getting the E_FAIL 0x80004005 error message (E as in Epic Fail?) on attempting to install SP1, and have tried everything I can think of bar a repair installation (if those even work any more as I know Vista didn't)

So far I have tried:

Removing any security applications
Network filter registry fix (both increased to 14 and removed value on seperate attempts)
Windows Readiness Tool
Fixed Windows Update through troubleshooting.

I am seriously about ready to explode, as everything else is running perfectly?

Help!

Run all other updates in Windows Update first, then try again.

^Not sure if this applies to you, but this is what I had to do to 3 machines

I've just tried that one too, and apart from Microsoft Live Essentials 2011 (which I've just hidden) I only have SP1 left to go :(

Is it worth removing all previous updates to a point and trying again with the standalone installer?

How long diid you give the Readiness Tool to run? It needs time to scan and fix any errors on your system, prior to SP1 installation.

Look at the Readiness Tool logfiles to see what problems have been fixed or if there are still any problems with your installation.

%SYSTEMROOT%\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log
%SYSTEMROOT%\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.persist.log

I had installation problems with installing SP1 and the Readiness Tool fixed them.

Nothing came of the readiness tool at all and I left that for an hour or so while I went and did something else, but I've fixed it now :)

It was a previous update that was cocking things up, so I uninstalled it and all was well :)
