Hello again :(

despite my original warm feeling towards W7 I am now seeing the cracks appear again (just like Vista). It seems that I can no longer DL large files. For the last few days any file over a couple of meg results in the following failure

<filename/path> could not be saved, because the source file could not be read. Try again later, or contact the server administrator

Its definitely not the source (I'll explain in a moment), It DL's the file to the Desktop for example and during DL it does the usual 2 part file rubbish (1 file called .part) then when its complete it seems to fail during the file creation.

What's really odd is that I can download this file when in XP (dual boot). So I initially thought it was my new SSD playing up, but I can copy the file across fine (even the same file location) without problem so I am thinking the drive is ok, especially baring in mind nothing errors on it during diag test.

Google hits me with 38000 returns on the error, none of which seem to offer any fixes, Firefox suggests I delete files in my FF profile which I've done to no avail. The only thing Ive not tried ( I will later) is to kill Nod32 during the DL but I cant get past why it will DL to a different drive fine.

Oh and before I hand the thread over, its the same result with IE8.

So....Help ?

Don't forget that W7 handles SSD drives totally differently to the way XP does, XP treats them like a traditional hard drive while W7 uses different partition mapping and general drive usage for them. Windows 7 could simply be finding an issue with your drive that Windows XP in it's primitive ignorance misses.

it seems like i was mistaken. It cant download to any drive at all. The one time it did succeed must have been a one off cause its failed every time tonight.

Ive tried running with no AV and everything mozilla forums suggest. The only thing lft to try is an OS reinstall. But if that fails to fix it coupled with the other problems this OS has brought, I think I'll be heading back to XP again.

Does it work if you let it save in the default location of <win7 drive>\users\<account>\downloads\ ?

I think I'll be heading back to XP again.

It sounds like you would far rather take the easy way out than actually do some problem solving. Your thread is the first time I've heard of such a problem so I can only suggest something to do with your personal build is causing the issue. It is not Windows 7's fault that you've broken something in it's configuration.

well maybe but I have a uni hand in on Friday and Autocad and SU doesnt really sit that well on W7 atm and I need to generate work. At this moment in time I cant DL files I need for the project (works FTP) and I dont have a great deal of time to trouble shoot it when I have XP on dual boot.

Now I realise this info wasn't in the original post so I forgive you thinking i'm giving up on on it at the first hurdle :P

As for default location, makes no difference where its DL to its the same result everywhere.

Things tried so far;

No AV
increase FF cache
used IE8
Tried different drive destinations
cleared cache
deleted the "compreg.dat" file from the Firefox profile folder
changed temp folder locations in environment variables
different and default destination folders
disabled any FF addons installed (only dictionary)
ran FF as administrator

I assume you are connected via a router and cable? It could well be the LAN drivers at fault, see if there are any on windows update for it - or better still, on the LAN card manufacturer site it may be even newer.

Mr G I'm going to give you an E-Kiss (or at least half of one).

There was indeed new Yokon drivers which are now installed and I also reinstalled FF and its fixed. No idea which one did it but thank you anyway it was a good shout :)

So, once again not a problem with Windows 7 then? It's amazing how many threads start off complaining that W7 is at fault, XP is perfect and it then turns out to be drivers/user configuration...

if you actually read the thread you would know that I never said it was a problem with W7.

Its just an issue I couldn't resolve at a time when I desperately needed to DL information from work for a hand in, the other issues that I am having with W7 is entirely placed at the door of the open GL drivers of ATI.

I did read the thread.

;)

I see these types of threads every day, so I apologise that your's is the one I have decided to point that out in. It by far not the worst I've seen this week!

Youve understandably taken it out of context because my OP was lacking in details regarding the other cracks ( I guess only I knew what I meant).

anyway its fixed lets not use my time up discussing my post ability, I have work to do and booze to drink ;)
