Hi all,

Currently studying for my CCENT and i have a Cisco 1800 Series router to play with as part of my learning.

Now this would normally connect to my COM port on my laptop. Only thing is, mine is a 15-pin female connection where the console cable i have is a 9-pin male.

Therefore, i have bought a USB->Serial adapter to connect.

Now the problem i have is, when using puTTY, how do i tell it i want to connect via USB using this adapter?.

I hope I've explained that OK. If you need to know anything else, please ask...help!!!

Is the device showing up as a virtual COM port?

You can change the COM port under PuTTY > Connection > Serial.

Device manager - just open all of the sections till you see com1 - it will be by itself as far as I know...

My PC isn't on so I can't look. Your see com1 but then com'x which will be your USB. Make sure there's no ! By the driver installed. Then take note of that com number and change putty settings.

Still don't understand the point in buying 1 router as you can't do anything but learn IOS, but you can hardly do that as you can't do any routing :p good luck with your studies anyway!

Yes that'd be the VGA monitor output.

As for the COM port though, in Device Manager you should see a "Ports (COM & LPT)" section and it'll be listed under here. I'll take a guess at it installing as COM3 as that's what every USB to serial adapter I've ever used has installed as.

In PuTTY you just need to choose the serial option and manually enter COM3 (or whatever your port is).

Also one thing to be aware of. If you plug the adapter into a different USB port you'll most likely find that Windows redetects it and it'll come on as a different COM port so try to keep it in the same physical USB port all the time.
