Win7 & Vista Keys

Hopefully someone will give me a simplified answer to this, but...

I have had a copy of Windows 7 Build 6801 ( 32Bit ) for a short while now.

I tried it... What a month or so ago, and I absolutely loved it.

Its made me stick to Vista64 a little longer.

Now, Im looking throught my licences today and I find that I am actually in the position of having a spare Vista32 Premium licence that I didnt even know I had.

Now, Im under the impression, that I can use my Vista number to work with Windows 7?

Is this true?

More importantly, can I use it for good?

Does it in effect give me a legal copy of Windows 7 that I can stick to?

Even better however, could I download the 64Bit version and do it on that instead?

Its all very well having Windows 7 but if I can use a non-used licence to activate Windows 7, then thats a better plan is it not?
 
I would like to get Win 7 but I rather to wait until final release -- im in no hurry, plenty of time so stay with Vista as SP2 is coming and just using Vista until W7 coming up...
 
Ah, its got the better of me.
I just swapped a PC for a Licence of Vista64 ( And I have spare Vista32 Licences - says it all to me ) and I put Vista64 back on.

So far, its of course a little early, but its bloody slow and so awful to use... Windows are pausing and its unresponsive as hell.

I just put SP1 on and all the drivers and other updates are all now done too! - It will soon start to settle in and hopefully it will be as nice as it was before I took it off!

Never happy me.

Anyway, I have just realised somehting that I have found with both XP64 and Vista64...

In both cases, on a fresh install, they are slower than when they have settled in.

I expected this with Vista64, but when I put XP64 on, I thought it was slower than Vista64 but now that I put Vist64 back on, I seen that XP64 was much quicker.

Its as if they both need to get into their routines to go well.

I am going to have to do a lot more testing on this now...

But yes, SP2 just around the corner, I certainly hope, that many of Win7's code will be used in SP2 and I am waiting for Win7 too... Thats a given.

I will contact MS about having my spare 32Bit Vista licences swapped for 64Bit in the mean time cos I have not used any 32Bit O/S for over 4 years now, except on my 32Bit PCs of course and then its been either Windows 2000 or Linux.
 
Vista 32 bit and 64 bit (aka x86 and x64) are the exact same licence. You can use your licence key / serial in either edition, so long as you only use it on one install at a time. There's absolutely no need to contact MS, and nothing needs swapping or converting.
 
Seriously?

No, surely not? I know that the Retail Upgrade I just sold off has both 32 and 64 Disks but only one licence... I know that, but OEM versions are not able to do that

Or so Im led to believe?

Ok, if thats the case, then I have just got rid of a half decent PC for nowt!

LOL Yes, seriously. I have OEM Vista Home Premium and that was sold (as they all are) as a 32 bit install disc. I just ordered a x64 disc from MS (cost about a tenner for the price of the DVD and postage) and installed it using my original serial/key. The licenses are definitely, 100%, legitimately dual purpose.

You are specifically allowed to use the serial in either 32 or 64 bit installs, provided you only use it in one live install at a time (eg you can swap between 32 and 64 bit as many times as you like using the same serial, but can't use it for two installs at once).

EDIT: Considering how many hundreds of times this has come up on here, I'm surprised you didn't already know tbh. Live and learn - maybe post and ask BEFORE you sell a rig next time? :(
 
Yes, I did know, but I didnt know that it also applied to OEM licences though...

As for selling a PC off... Its not that bad... I have tons of them and need to get rid anyway..

Its was only a basic setup, ( Lie ) nothing fancy. ( Another lie )

Im not upset by it ( Third lie in a row )
