Win7 - Windows live notification?!

Had win7 for about an hour...
First thing i notice is the horrable use of notification area, not only that Windows msger will not sit in there nice and neat... it demands to sit in the task bar and not run in the background !? It also for some reason has the same button twice >username(status)< then >win live msger< which are the exact same WINDOW!!!! what the hell....

have i got settings wrong can anyone please help wih this?

In a nutshell: Change the msnmsgr.exe's compatability mode to Vista.
