Win7 woes

Ok, installed win7 the other day and everything seemed to be good.

But, when I try to run Steam, I get 'Cannot connect to server' messages. It worked fine in XP so I dont think my Smoothwall is to blame. Ive tried all the compatibility crap and nothing works. Ive turned off the Windows Firewall (dont need it) and the crappy UAC (started to really *~@! me off).
Im also having huge problems with this file ownership crap. Is there anyway of turning this off? Since im the only one who uses this computer, I cant see why I need something like this.
ATM, I win7 has locked the Documents and settings folder (cant view it through explorer) and Ive had all sorts of 'fun' sorting out WoW with Win7 not copying over certain files in the addon directory. Not to mention all of those lovely icons with the padlock on them. Any idea of a quick way of removing them?

Im really starting to pull out my hair with this and Im seriously giving thought to moving back to XP64 since that doesnt deny me access to my own files!

steam works fine out the box on windows 7.
Also it shouldn't of locked my documents.

How did you install it, done anything else odd with it? Is it a download from a safe place. or have you obtained it from illegal sites.

OK

Its a clean install, downloaded fresh from MS.

To help explain what has gone on, I'll describe how I went about it.

I was running XP SP2 32bit. That had:-

C: - main drive
D: - 2nd HDD
E: - 3rd HDD
G: - DVD Drive

That worked fine, no problems.

Now, I upgraded last weekend. New CPU, Mobo, ram, video card and HDD.

I installed Win7 onto the new HDD, with only the new HDD and DVD drive attached (incase the old boot drive caused problems).
Fresh install, everything went ok. I run with a user account with admin rights.
So I connected my old drived up.
Now my drives look like:-

C: - Windows 7 New HDD 1st partition
D: - New HDD 2nd partition
E: - DVD drive
F: - Old XP Boot drive
G: - old 2nd drive
H: - old 3rd drive

On the old drives I had all my games/apps that I wanted to copy over. Now this is where I started to have the problems.
The plan was to copy all the info off the old drives, so i could then retire them to another system. But Win7 decided that I didnt own them fully. When I copied WoW accross, any .LUA files didnt copy over (these are addons for WoW). After much fiddling about, somehow I managed to get WoW accross working ok. But I decided to call it quits for the night and play a little L4D.
I navigated to the steam folder (On the old 2nd HDD) and ran Steam.exe.
First it complained that it needed to be run as administrator (which I allowed it to) and then when I ran it for the second time, I failed to connect to the steam server. I opened ports on my Smoothwall, but Steam still couldnt connect. And now Im at a loss to whats causing the trouble.

Also, as a bit of a side note, if I use the PC for a while and not access the internet, the connection stops working until I disable and enable the NIC. Bad NIC or bad windows?

easiest way is to boot into XP and copy across the files you need which are stored in your xp "personal" folders to a folder which can be accessed by both, such as a new created folder at the root of the W7 drive. Thats how i did it or if you take ownership via properties, you can lose access should you need to boot into xp again.

Steam worked fine for me, I just copied the steam fold from my Vista install to W7 program fils(x86) and then reinstalled Steam. All my game were there and working (as well as can be expected in a RC OS). Try disabling your firewall.

steam has worked flawlessly in every version of W7 that I've tried, as it has for many others on here

don't know what to suggest, take ownership of the other drive(s) and try again

Funny, I was under the impression steam didn't work on win7 with it being pre-release and all.. am I confusing it with something else?

Well I have a stranger problem than that. Win 7 recognizes my mic, but gfwl will not. It has to be win 7 as I have tried everything to get it to work but to no avail. I googled it and others are having this same problem, and no fix. I'm just hoping it to be better with 7600 build.
