win8 and xbox360 sharing

so i've just today discovered that i can push videos playing on my win8 pc xbox video app to my xbox360 to be played on my tv screen. Pretty neat, however I'd like to see if there is a way to do it the other way around and with more file types.

i've previously used windows media center app on the 360 but it's beyond slow and rubbish, xbox video on xbox360 is much nicer, however it only seems to show movies to buy/rent, not what's stored on my pc.

any way to see this?

also any way to play more file types? .mkv seems to be missing from the folder

i use plex media server put everything in a folder on my lappy and then my xbox just seems to pick it up even streams 720p mkv lovely in video apps just select my video on xbox
