Hello

I got mad and did a format c:\ on an old PC, now I cannot load anything on it.
It had win98 on it before. Now I went to this web site and bought this one:

http://www.softwarevending.com/info-Microsoft_Windows_98_Second_Edition.html

Now I made a boot disk on a labtop and I can get the PC to boot up and ask me if I want to boot with CD_ROM as well and I say yes.

Trouble is I cannot see any files on any CD I insert into cd drive, it only shows volume label
C:\ has no files in it as well since I reformatted it.
What do I need to do to get CD to display files so I can run win98.exe

thanks

I have a CD on Win98SE. If you have the OEM sticker and license then I can send you a copy. You need to have a valid license and key otherwise it will not work though.

On the download page after paying it displayed licence as well. So yes I have it.

I tried sticking into my labtop, it displays win98 and if I click it it brings up a window and starts playing misic for win 98.

From memory the Win98SE CD is bootable so set your BIOS to boot from CD. If it can't read the CD then drive may be damaged.

I have solved the orginal issue and managed to load win 98. It turned out that I should not have extracted the ISO file using winrar but just burn the cd with ISO. Files can be then seen and loaded win98. However, when trying to load drivers for installed devices, it failed to find a few drivers and also a file within some directory was not there and asked to insert win98 CD and get dll, but it was not there either.

So I have a PC that boots win98, I have had to just click here and there to install any driver to stop found PCI communications, video and sound h/w, I have no sound now, display works and so I have a poor man's PC, maybe I will just get rid of it, looks like I wasted my money on the win98 downloaded image!!!

/Gob smacked on someone installing Windows 98 in 2008 :D

Your lacking drivers for your install. Depending on how old your machine is you will have to do a little hunting on the net. Make sure you install your motherboard drivers first.

If you own a generic non-branded PC it's probably easier to take off the side cover (while PC is turned off and disconnected from wall socket) and look for the manufacturer and model name of the motherboard.

Also look for the same details of any add-in cards you have fitted, such as graphics card, sound card, etc. But I imagine you are using the motherboards built in options. So there won't be any other circuit boards connected.

Then see if you can find correct drivers for that product from the manufacturer's website.
